The plane was heading to Paloch in Upper Nile State, and crashed into a small farming community on a small island in the White Nile river, just 800 metres from Juba airport.
Radio Miraya, a UN-backed station says as many as 40 people are feared dead, and airport officials told them only three passengers survived.
The main fuselage of the plane ploughed into thick woodland, with debris scattered around the riverbank in a wide area. Several small farming communities live on the island, and it is not clear if some of the victims are people on the ground.
Cargo planes to remote parts of South Sudan often carry passengers too. See More tragic photos below:
