At a  news conference on illegal rice importation into Nigeria, On Tuesday in Abuja, The Comptroller-General of Customs,  Mr Hammed Ali  said 99% of rice smuggled through the land borders into the country are not fit for human consumption.
He said:

“Importation of rice into the country is not banned but restricted on the point of entry to seaports only. `We remain firm in our resolve to enforce the restriction of rice imports only to our seaports. “We have re-organised our anti-smuggling patrols to provide additional capability and bite,’’
He added that samples of some of the rice seized by Customs over a period of time were referred to NAFDAC to ascertain their condition. But that test results have certified that smuggled rice through the borders was unfit for human consumption and discouraged Nigerians from buying them.

He said:
“We have seen rice conveyed in open wooden canoes across our creeks and water ways with generous amount of dirty waters splashing on them. “We have seen some mixed with other grains bags to deceive customs; some are stuffed inside any available crevice and compartments of vehicles, including the engine area.
“The concealed rice is thereafter re-bagged half cooked and presented in our markets for sale as imported rice.
“Bags of rice meant for Nigerians’ consumption (are) being conveyed in coffins inside make shift ambulance vehicles. “Often time, importers in the borders have to wait for months for the green light from corrupt customs officials before they gamble their ways across the borders.
“Rice being a perishable product, lose valuable shelve life in non conductive strong conditions. “We have strong evidence linking some reputable importers to cases of re-bagging expired rice to prolong their shelve life,’’ he added.
Ali also said that those who promote economic subterfuge were seeking a re-introduction of quota system to import 1.5 million tonnes through the entry point “We will be waiting for them.”

Ali said that many state governments are investing in local production of rice and that the Federal Government, through the intervention by CBN and Bank of Industry, is also investing in the local production of rice within the country.

Ali said Kebbi State Government has so far harvested over 700,000 tonnes of rice from irrigation farming.

40 year old Cameroon football legend Rigobert Song has reportedly left his coma state but is still fighting for his life after suffering a stroke attack in Yaounde, Cameroon on Sunday.

Are you worried your heart is much older than you are and that you're on the verge of having a heart attack?
Well a test can estimate the age of your ticker, as well as revealing how long you can expect to live without having a heart attack or a stroke.
But a new update to the 16-question tool offers advice and interventions to help lower the vital organ's age and keep you alive for longer.

It also seeks to know where you live, whether you're an active smoker and your ethnicity - all factors that impact the risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
The free tool - initially launched last year - also scours for information about your cholesterol levels, blood pressure and whether or not you have any other conditions that increase your risk.
It is designed to work on people aged 30 or older who have not already been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease.

All garri soakers should let go for now.

These garri are often fried half dry and are subsequently dried on polythene sheets on the tarred roads or compounds in the villages.

Professor Nigel Hunt, dean of the Royal College of Surgeons' dental faculty, said: 'It is absolutely intolerable that in this day and age, in a civilised country, children are having so many teeth out for decay, which is over 90 per cent preventable.

Thursday, the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, became one of the hospitals in Nigeria that offers kidney transplant services following a successful kidney transplant on a 56-year- old man in Lagos.

The life-saving procedure which took two and half hours was the first of its in LASUTH.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Wale Oke, said the successful kidney transplant was part of the state government’s promises to deliver excellent healthcare services to the people of Lagos State. He added that several consultations were made before the surgery to make sure that the patients were well selected to avoid complications after the exercise.
He said: “But thank God today, both the donor and recipient are in sound health,"
Oke explained that the patient, who was at the end-stage renal disease, was selected for the maiden surgery, and after about six-hour surgery (organ harvesting and implantation), the operation was successful.

The elated CMD said:
“LASUTH has come of age and we are glad. We are able to harness what we have and so we will continue to improve on infrastructure. Kidney transplant is not free; it cannot be free, but with us doing it here, the cost will be affordable (compared to traveling to India or United Kingdom for operation).”
The Chief medical Director assured Lagosians that the hospital will continue to bring excellent and special services at the hospital.

The leader of the transplant team, a Consultant Nephrologist, Dr. Jacob Awobusuyi, said the initiative was conceived three years ago.

He said that the latest of several services offered in the hospital would help stop the trend of patients going to India and returning with complications that often eventually kill them.

Awobusuyi, said that the patient, who is still recuperating in the ward, had to be persuaded to have the operation here in Nigeria instead of India.
So after a year of dialysis, the patient came up with his nephew as a donor which made LASUTH medical team start the operation.
He said that both the 56 year old recipient and the 26-year-old donor expressed concern before the surgery but that they were both relieved and happy after the successful operation.
Watermelon contains thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, choline, lycopene and betaine. According to the National Watermelon Promotion Board, watermelon contains more lycopene than any other fruit or vegetable.
One cup of diced watermelon contains
43 calories, 0 grams of fat, 2 grams of sodium, 11 grams of carbohydrate (including 9 grams of sugar and 1 gram of fiber) and 1 gram of fiber. One cup of watermelon will provide 17% of vitamin A, 21% of vitamin C, 2% of iron and 1% of calcium needs for the day.
Many studies have suggested that increasing consumption of plant foods like watermelon decreases the risk of obesity and overall mortality, diabetes, heart disease and promotes a healthy complexion and hair, increased energy, overall lower weight.
Asthma prevention: The risks for developing asthma are lower in people who consume a high amount of certain nutrients. One of these nutrients is vitamin C, found in many fruits and vegetables including watermelon.
Blood pressure: A study published by the American Journal of Hypertension found that watermelon extract supplementation reduced ankle blood pressure, brachial blood pressure and carotid wave reflection in obese middle-aged adults with pre-hypertension or stage 1 hypertension and that watermelon extract improved arterial function.
Diets rich in lycopene may help protect against heart disease.
Cancer: As an excellent source of the strong antioxidant vitamin C as well as other antioxidants, watermelon can help combat the formation of free radicals known to cause cancer. Lycopene intake has been linked with a decreased risk of prostate cancer prevention in several studies.
Digestion and regularity: Watermelon, because of its water and fiber content, helps to prevent constipation and promote regularity for a healthy digestive tract.
Hydration: Made up of 92% water and full of important electrolytes, watermelon is a great snack to have on hand during the hot summer months to prevent dehydration.
Inflammation: Choline is a very important and versatile nutrient in watermelon that aids our bodies in sleep, muscle movement, learning and memory. Choline also helps to maintain the structure of cellular membranes, aids in the transmission of nerve impulses, assists in the absorption of fat and reduces chronic inflammation.1
Muscle soreness: Watermelon and watermelon juice have been shown to reduce muscle soreness and improve recovery time following exercise in athletes. Researchers believe this is likely do to the amino acid L-citrulline contained in watermelon.
Skin: Watermelon is also great for your skin because it contains vitamin A, a nutrient required for sebum production that keeps hair moisturized. Vitamin A is also necessary for the growth of all bodily tissues, including skin and hair.
Adequate intake of vitamin C (one cup of watermelon provides 21% of daily needs) is also needed for the building and maintenance of collagen, which provides structure to skin and hair. Watermelon also contributes to overall hydration, which is vital for having healthy looking skin and hair.

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has apprehended fake female doctor, Nwosu Angela Njide, and handed her over to the police.
Leadership reports that the arrest was carried out by Henry Okwuokenye, the head of Department of the Inspectorate Unit of the MDCN, on Wednesday, September 2.
It is worth mentioning that it is the first successful arrest of the first female fake doctor on the record of the MDCN.
Okwuokenye revealed that the woman who is in her 30s had confessed to have worked in different places, including the British American Tobacco clinic in Ibadan, the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and eventually in Rauz Hospital, Apo in Abuja.
Okwuokenye said that more than a year ago the fake doctor went to Oyo state to register for her license to practice medica services at the ministry of health under the Oyo State Director. However, officials of the ministry became suspicious of her qualifications and went to the MDCN to verify the authenticity of her claims.
Nwosu claimed to have graduated from medical school 2005 at University of Nigeria but failed to answer simple questions any medical student is expected to know.
After the Oyo state ministry of health had refused to register her, the woman relocated to Abuja, and went on her own to the MDCN to register for her license.
“Nwosu came to the council to apply for a new folio number, unique to every practicing doctor in Nigeria, in attempt to get full registration.
“We checked and she was not on the list. She claimed to have graduated from UNN, but we went to verify and we discovered that it was all lies. As at this time she was on the run,” Okwuokenye said.
After that, the MDCN officials found out that the fake doctor was working in Rauz Hospital, Apo, and arrested her there.
